I just got back from Tijuana, Mexico. My third week-long construction mission trip. (First two were in the Dominican Republic).
Thought I’d share a few photos and thoughts.
First, thanks to my partners and employees for letting me go and serve during a business week. Very generous – and an act of CoreGives in its own right.
Second, thanks to my church friends at Brookfield Lutheran for organizing this trip for the past 10+ years. Over that time, BLC has helped build dozens of 12′ x 12′ homes for our fellow believers who were in desperate need of housing.
The little square houses we’re able to build together are truly treasured.
These three mission trips collectively have opened my eyes to the needs of the world: physical, emotional and, yes, spiritual. No matter where we live – or under what conditions we live – we all need food and shelter, love and family, and God’s grace and mercy in our lives.
My church missions (at least in part) encouraged us to organize our own outreach program at Core. Although CoreGives activities are not faith-based (we have 40+ employees who give selflessly for their own reasons), each “mission” we take on is still an act of faith.
We believe that our little CoreGives initiatives – whether reading to kids at Walker’s Point neighborhood schools, stocking food pantries, or planting shrubs in the park – will impact people’s lives for good both today and into the future.
We believe its in our DNA (God’s fingerprints on our lives?) to do good for others. Yes, even heartless ad executives, PR practitioners and someday-we-will-rule-the-world web programmers can bless others.
And while we could certainly do it from a distance by anonymously writing a check, there’s nothing like rolling up your sleeves and working side by side with the people you care to impact.
Personally, I take part in missions and CoreGives out of love for God. Jesus said whatever we do “for the least of these”, we’re really doing for Him. For me, the heart of CoreGives is responding to God’s unconditional love for us.
For others at Core, I’m sure the heart of CoreGives is something else. A desire to serve people. To see a different culture. To feel good. Or just to experience something new.
Whatever the reason, I’m proud of my agency – especially those who organize our CoreGives efforts – for reaching out beyond their own needs and circumstances to provide relief and service to those less fortunate.
To me, that is love. That’s the heart of the matter. And there really is no greater purpose.
