How did Wisconsin fare in the National Bike Challenge?

As we welcome September, we say “farewell” to the 2012 Get Up and Ride Challenge, which ended Aug., 31. The challenge is established by the League of American BicyclistsKimberly-Clark’s Get Up & Ride and Bikes Belong. It’s a free program that ran right through the summer, from May 1 until Aug., 31. The goal was to get people moving … on their bikes … for exercise, fun, to get some cars off the road and to try to gather 50,000 people to bike 10 million miles. Health and wellness is important to us at Core Creative.

[icon_list type=”arrow”]Core Creative’s participants made a fine showing, but first I’d like to share some results from the National Bike Challenge overall (found at the Challenge’s site).

  • Nationally, a total of 12 million miles were achieved by the final day, an effort from more than 30,000 riders. (End result: 12,094,591 miles from 30,391 riders). That distance supposedly saved more than 11 million pounds of CO2, and more than $2.25 million. With a little math, that’s the equivalent of taking more than 900 cars off the road for a full year.

[icon_list type=”arrow”]We should all be very proud. We live in a fantastic state for bicycling.

  • State-wide, Wisconsin placed No. 2 in the nation for points per rider! (Beaten out by Vermont) Our state contributed more than 20 percent of the miles, riding more than 2.5 million miles.
  • Wisconsin placed four communities in the top 10 and was the only state to place more than one community in the top 10 results. Five Wisconsin workplaces placed in the top 10. Trek and Kimberly-Clark Corporation landed at No. 1 and No. 2 in the entire country.
  • Wisconsin’s individual participation increased 40 percent over last year.
  • Wisconsin participants increased their total mileage by 115 percent, saving the economy $550,000.

  • We logged 1,244 miles, beating last year’s total by 218 miles.
  • Together, we saved 1,138 pounds of CO2 and $520.
